about linda herman & her philosophy
Two persistent, seemingly disparate threads have woven their way through my entire life: design and helping others. As a senior in high school, I vacillated between a career in nursing or graphic design. As a profession, I chose nursing and practiced for more than twenty years in the field of oncology. At the same time, I also established my own home-based floral design business, Festoons, which fulfilled the more creative side of my personality.
In 1998, I left my nursing career to pursue an education in landscape design, a natural segue springing from my love of flowers, the outdoors and graphic design. At the Landscape Institute in Cambridge (formally Radcliffe Seminars), I learned how to assist others in creating beautiful spaces. Using the holistic approach of the health world, I found that designing gardens requires knowledge of the client, an understanding of their tastes and a careful assessment of the interior of their home. I began to see that there needed to be more than just a connection between their inside and outside spaces; rather, that the areas had to become connected, and seen as one inter-related space. Thus, my practice of unifying home and garden design began.
